Change Engine Impeller

Frequency: yearly

The Yanmar manual says this should be replaced every 600hrs.

Items Required

  • 12mm wrench (?)
  • Replacement impeller and impeller cover o-ring
  • Dish soap
  • Grease

Procedure

  1. Close engine raw water seacock.
  2. Remove impeller cover. This will leak seawater all over the engine into the bilge, capture if desired.
  3. Remove impeller. Use extractor bolt if threaded, otherwise use pliers on vanes closest to core alternating sides of shaft.
  4. Apply grease to shaft & impeller mating surfaces.
  5. Lubricate new impeller vanes with dish soap.
  6. Insert new impeller optionally using a nylon tie to compress vanes.
  7. Clean cover and pump mating surfaces.
  8. Apply dish soap to new o-ring and insert into channel.
  9. Install cover.
  10. Open engine raw water seacock.
  11. Run engine, check for leaks.
